Mike P. Nelson Will Direct the Next Saw Movie
Mike P. Nelson has been officially selected to direct the untitled next instalment in the Saw franchise.
Horror audiences will recognise Nelson as the filmmaker behind the 2021 Wrong Turn and the recent Silent Night, Deadly Night, while his latest movie, Beware Boiúna, is due to arrive in cinemas on October 2 following its Fantastic Fest premiere.
That résumé makes his appointment particularly interesting.
Saw has always existed somewhere between gruesome spectacle and psychological horror. The elaborate traps might dominate the marketing, but the original movie was built around confinement, mystery and the slowly unfolding realisation that virtually nothing in the room was what it appeared to be.
According to Nelson, the filmmakers haven’t forgotten that mystery.
Speaking about taking control of the franchise, Nelson described working in the Saw universe alongside Wan as a dream opportunity and teased a screenplay with new bloody ideas while keeping the original film’s mystery.
That sounds like exactly the combination longtime fans will be watching for.
James Wan and Leigh Whannell Are Returning
Perhaps the biggest part of today’s announcement isn’t who’s directing.
It’s who’s coming back.
James Wan and Leigh Whannell are both producing the new movie.
Wan directed the original Saw, while Whannell wrote the screenplay and appeared as Adam Stanheight.
Their tiny, vicious 2004 horror movie became the beginning of something neither audiences nor Hollywood could ignore.
Now they’re helping shape its future.
Wan has said making the original Saw was a defining experience and that finding a filmmaker who could respect that world was important to him. He described Nelson as having a distinctive filmmaking voice and an inventive approach to horror.
Jason Blum will produce alongside Wan and Whannell.
Executive producers include Mark Burg, Oren Koules, Stacey Testro, Michael Clear, and Judson Scott, while Alayna Glasthal and Sarah Paek oversee the project for Atomic Monster.
For a franchise entering a new era, that’s some serious horror pedigree around the table.
Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock Are Writing the Movie
The next Saw isn’t simply an abandoned version of an earlier sequel being pulled from a drawer.
Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock wrote the screenplay, and their credits include Dune: Prophecy.
Exactly what they’ve devised remains secret.
No official plot synopsis exists yet, and the filmmakers haven’t revealed where the movie sits within the wider Saw timeline.
That’s especially interesting, given how complicated that timeline has become.
The franchise has spent years expanding the history surrounding John Kramer and the people drawn into his philosophy, while 2023’s Saw X moved backwards in the chronology and placed Kramer firmly back at the centre of the story.
Whether the new movie continues from there or heads somewhere completely different remains unknown.
Tobin Bell's Return Has Not Been Announced
And then we arrive at the enormous question.
Is Tobin Bell coming back?
Right now, we don’t know.
Bell’s John Kramer has become inseparable from Saw, and Saw X once again showed how central the character remains to the franchise.
But neither Lionsgate nor Blumhouse has announced Bell as part of the new film’s cast.
No cast has been confirmed yet.
That means any suggestion that John Kramer, Amanda Young, or another established character will return is currently speculation.
For now, Jigsaw’s involvement remains one of the project’s biggest mysteries.
Blumhouse Is Now Helping Guide the Franchise
The movie also reflects an important behind-the-scenes change.
In 2025, Blumhouse acquired the prospective rights to the Saw franchise previously controlled by longtime producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg. Lionsgate remained a partner and retained its existing ownership and distribution position.
That deal effectively brought Saw back into James Wan’s orbit.
Wan’s Atomic Monster merged with Blumhouse in 2024, and Jason Blum said at the time of the Saw deal that Wan and Whannell would return to help guide the property’s future.
Today’s announcement is the clearest indication yet of what that future looks like.
Rather than simply putting another numbered sequel into production, the new creative team is being assembled around the people who created Saw in the first place.
Saw Has Spent More Than 20 Years Testing Its Victims
It’s remarkable to consider where all of this began.
The original Saw was a relatively small horror production built around an irresistible concept: two men awaken chained in a filthy bathroom, with no idea how they got there.
A corpse lies between them.
A tape recorder provides instructions.
And behind it all is a man obsessed with testing whether people truly appreciate being alive.
What followed was one of modern horror’s most recognisable franchises.
Ten theatrical films have been released since Saw arrived in 2004, and the series has become a billion-dollar property for Lionsgate.
The franchise’s mythology grew more elaborate, its traps more horrific, and its chronology more tangled.
But underneath everything remained the same basic question:
How far would you go to survive?
When Will the New Saw Movie Be Released?
That’s another question Lionsgate still hasn’t answered.
The new Saw movie has no announced theatrical release date, and production dates haven’t been publicly revealed.
It doesn’t even have an official title.
What we do now have is something considerably more concrete than rumours about the franchise’s future.
We have a director.
We have writers.
We have Lionsgate and Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
And, perhaps most significantly, we have James Wan and Leigh Whannell back behind Saw.
More than twenty years after a filthy bathroom, two chained men and one unforgettable final revelation changed modern horror, another game is being prepared.
We just don’t know the rules yet.
